Time and time again we’re reminded that these large companies we shop at and work for don’t give a sh*t about us.
As a black queer woman, I can’t be the only one disillusioned with the state of things.
Early on, I realized that the traditional 9 to 5 culture wasn’t built for someone like me. Since my first job at 16 years old, I left work feeling a growing sense that something wasn’t right.
The quiet decay of dreams.
The ways my kindness was exploited.
The disparity between how much I was paid and what I needed to live.
Even when I was “lucky” enough to get an office job, the same discontent and disillusionment persisted.
Still, though, I went to college believing in the myth that getting a degree would guarantee me a dream job.
Fast forward 3 years and there I was applying for fast food jobs with a Bachelor's degree.
At that time I realized that no “regular” job would give me the satisfaction I was looking for.
This is when I started looking for alternatives.
I learned about high-income skills, entrepreneurship, solopreneurship, and the creator economy.
I saw people escaping their 9 to 5’s and finding freedom through work that they were passionate about.
The was just one issue.
Most of those people were straight white guys.
Although there are probably plenty of BIPOC and queer creative entrepreneurs out there, they’re overshadowed by a seemingly white majority.
So as I was learning about these topics from people with unfamiliar voices.
Although their overall message was clear, I wished I saw more people like me out there sharing their knowledge and launching businesses of their own.
Creative entrepreneurship is accessible to everyone, but when all the biggest faces in the space are mostly white faces, it can feel like there’s no room for people like me.
And that’s why I shifting the focus of this newsletter to be the solution to that problem.
