The AI Propaganda is Getting Out of Hand
I hate getting WALL-E involved but he's a part of this too now...
Nothing frustrates me more than how often AI comes up in my online life. Imagine hating sports but all anyone wants to talk about is baseball.
Either you believe in the impending apocalypse brought on by our soon-to-be robot masters or you treat A.I. like a misunderstood friend with a good heart.
Oh, they can be intimidating but they wouldn’t hurt a fly. They’re just a little “special”
Although I disagree with both stances, I’ve mostly seen media align with the latter, which I find especially insidious.
Just Your Hand Dandy Helper
Media sounds too dignified for what are advertisements from companies glorifying AI-backed apps/features.
These ads claim their AI features help people get more work done and even dare to say it makes people more creative.
Grammarly is particularly guilty of making such claims, which is even more depressing coming from a company geared towards writers.
They say things like:
Save hours on research by asking the AI tool to summarize articles
Use the generative AI to help you rewrite sentences for clarity.
Help speed up your brainstorming sessions with AI.
Such ads characterize AI as a thankless hero for all creatives. The Merlin to your King Arthur.
They emphasize how the user is in control of the AI. The user sets the boundaries and the AI tools will only work within those boundaries. That way users don’t feel bad about AI being a part of their creative process.
The AUDACITY of these companies to advertise AI to creatives while we watch it slowly take away jobs from us is INSANE.
What’s worse is now it feels like creatives are being gaslit into using AI from other people telling them that they either jump on the bandwagon or get left in the dust.
“I use AI and my business has grown exponentially.”
Good for you, but at what cost???
The Road to Brainlessness
I swear if I see one more person who claims to be a writer telling other writers to use AI, I’m going to scream.
AARRGGGHHHH……I saw another one.
Let me be clear:
If AI is a part of your creative process, you have officially started your journey to brain rot and have done a disservice to humankind.
Oh, but look at the time I saved from using ChatGPT.
Saving time is overrated. If you need AI to do the intellectual legwork, you’re lazy.
Oh, I just use it to help me come up with ideas and proofread my work.
So you’re too afraid to come up with your own ideas and once again too lazy to do the extra legwork? And you can’t have a real person look over your work?
Oh, I just use it for research.
AGAIN, are you too lazy to Google search the stuff yourself? You don’t want to talk to real people and get nuanced answers?
I genuinely would have more respect for someone who plagiarizes other people’s work than someone using AI. At least that person sees some value in another human’s work. AI soullessly plagiarizes other humans without even having the capacity to appreciate it.
And yes, I want to sound this harsh, and no I’m not being hyperbolic.
I try to be open-minded about most things, but I’m with the Luddites on this one.
I’m reminded of my aversion to smart home features that turn off your lights or close the blinds without you having to get up.
I understand how convenient that may be for some people, especially those with disabilities. But for the able-bodied folks, why can’t we just get up and close the freaking blinds?!?!
Again, people love to talk about all the time they save by using such apps, but will we get to the point where we don’t know how to open doors because our home assistant does it for us?
Will we eventually lose our ability to read because Siri always reads things for us?
Will we lose the ability to create because AI can write and paint for us?
It’ll save us a lot of time, but then we’ll be just like the humans in WALL-E.
Normally, I hate the “slippery slope” argument. But I genuinely think it applies to this situation.
All that time and convenience we get from AI comes at the cost of using our brains, in my opinion.
I’m no neurosurgeon, but I think our brains were made to think and they’re meant to be challenged. Yes, it takes time to brainstorm and research, but we gain a whole lot of knowledge during that time. Knowledge we wouldn’t get if we just sent a prompt to AI.
Abolish AI
Any creative worth their salt should do everything in their power to keep AI away from their work as much as possible.
To uphold their integrity and to ensure their continued growth as a creative, AI should be out of the question.
You might be slower, you may be less popular, and it’ll be hard.
But at least you can stand behind your work and know that you and only YOU made it.
