It’s almost been six months since graduating college and not much has happened.
Garden Work is Hard Work
Currently, I’m working as a seasonal garden merchandiser.
When it’s written like that, it almost sounds dreamlike.
You’re probably picturing someone delicately arranging flowers, watering them, and giving helpful gardening advice to customers.
Well, you’d be wrong.
Here’s what a garden merchandiser actually does.
Almost every day, I push and pull heavy carts loaded with hundreds of plants and try to squeeze them into any space available.
I’ve yet to go through a day of work without being:
Splashed with an ungodly amount of plant juice (i.e. dirt water)
Scratched or poked by thorns or plastic plant holders
Harassed by rude customers
Not to mention I’m working outside.
In North Carolina.
In the summer 🔥.
If you saw me in person, you probably wouldn’t think a young woman like me would be out here manhandling a bunch of plants outside in the heat.
I wouldn’t either.
But here we are.
It’s not all bad. The people I work with are cordial and supportive. Some customers aren’t annoying and sometimes I’m actually able to help people which always feels good.
That being said, just because someone’s wearing gloves at your local garden center, doesn’t mean they know anything about plants. I literally just put plants out. Don’t ask me about watering procedures or what plants to get. Please and thank you.
That said, it’s definitely NOT the dream job, as the cons outweigh the pros.
Thankfully, it’s a seasonal job, so it’ll end in a few weeks.
However, that means I’ll have to go on the job search again, which is something I am not looking forward to.
As someone who has been working since they were sixteen, I’m not eager to work for yet another retail service job, even if it’s temporary.
Dealing with customers is a nightmare and I’m just not built for long-term manual labor. Especially for how little I’m getting paid.
Some girlies like being outside and working with folks. And good on them for knowing what they want.
But I know what I DON’T want and I would much rather have my job fund my physical activity instead of having a job comprising of physical activity.
In Other News…
I’ve started pursuing a certificate to beef up my resume.
I just got fed up with waiting around for a job to save me.
I felt like a passive participant in my future, which was eating away at me. I knew that if I just kept applying and not adding anything to my resume, new doors wouldn’t open for me.
Maybe instead of waiting for God, God was waiting for me to make the next move.
So far it’s been going great. I have this new excitement to learn and I have this gut feeling that this getting me a little closer to where I want to be.
Hopefully, in a couple of months, I’ll have more knowledge to add to my arsenal.
I’ve also started taking steps to address my mental health. It’s too early to tell how things will go, but I’m hoping for the best.
I pray these summer months are treating you guys kindly.
Enjoy this quick little update on me.
Thank you xx
